Stairs - Contemporary

We suggest crisp clean lines form the basis of a contemporary staircase specification. This includes options from low cost softwood square sections, to specifications that combine Oak with steel or glass balustrading. The following examples are of specifications that have satisfied customers requesting a contemporary staircase.

Standard Specifications

The most basic specification using square newels and square balusters, finished in white paint, simple and plain. This option could be enhanced with a contrasting handrail in clear lacquer finished Sapele or Oak.

Optional Specifications

Should more detailing be required, the Newels and Balusters could be Stop Chamfered. The Stop Chamfered theme can be further enhanced with the use of ‘V’ Grooves in the centre of the Newels and Balusters. These features can be carried through with the Handrail being formed with Chamfers and ‘V’ Grooves, replacing the usual curved and rounded sections.

Mixed Materials

The use of Oak combined with contrasting materials in white or chrome can be very effective.
A white painted string with chrome balusters framed by oak newels, handrail and base rail.
An alternative to metal could be toughened glass panels, but if a more simple effect is required, square balusters finished in white could be framed by Oak.

Cut String Staircases

The cut string staircase is a traditional construction but can also be given a contemporary appearance.
Following the basic rule of crisp clean lines, all curves rounds and mouldings are replaced with straight lines and chamfers. The use of contrasting colour between the Oak treads and white strings is also very effective .
